Mechanical engineering research endeavors contribute to the understanding of fundamental scientific and engineering issues and concepts, provide benefits to the nation's economy and contribute to an enriched quality of life. Research is also an integral component of our educational program; graduate and undergraduate students have historically made significant contributions to our research. In fact, Carnegie Mellon recently received a National Science Foundation Recognition Award for the Integration of Research and Education.

Transferring our research results to society is an important element of the university's mission. The most traditional forms of transfer are through publications and the knowledge our students take with them when they leave the university. Results are also transferred through industrial collaborations, licensing and the creation of new businesses that spin out
from the university. 

The department strives to develop long-term relationships with industrial partners that are mutually beneficial to both parties.  Sponsorship opportunities in the department range from "bricks and mortar" initiatives to provisions for open-ended undergraduate research challenges. Our present corporate sponsors include Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Hewlett Packard, Honda, IBM, Imation, Innovationworks, Intel and Kennametal.
