Majidi Awarded Office of Naval Research Young Investigator

Assistant Professor Carmel Majidi was recently awarded the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Young Investigator Award.  The ONR Young Investigator Award honors outstanding new faculty members at institutions of higher education to support their research and encourage their teaching and research careers.  Applicants are selected by ONR based on several criteria, including past performance, publications, professional activities, and honors and awards.

Professor Majidi's proposal entitled "Soft Active Materials and Electronics for Bioinspired and Biomechanically-Compatible Robotics" focuses on new classes of electronics, sensors, and machines that are as soft as natural skin and continue to work even when stretched to several times their natural length.  Professor Majidi believes that these materials could potentially function as "artificial muscles" and "artificial skins" in future Naval technologies like biologically-inspired marine robots or powered human exoskeletons that prevent injury and assist with physically strenuous tasks.
