Solar Splash 2010

Carnegie Mellon Solar Splash (CMSS) is a student run undergraduate engineering organization. The primary focus of the group is to design and build a solar/electric boat for entry in the Solar Splash competition. The competitive craft is used as an exciting way to demonstrate the feasibility of solar power. The group draws members from various departments and is open to anyone interested in hands on work and making decisions.

The Solar Splash competition is the World Championship of Intercollegiate Solar/Electric Boating.  In the course of an academic year, CMSS designed a boat, raised enough funds, and entered the competition. While the drive train caused performance issues for the team in the 2010 competition, the group won the Outstanding System Design award and placed second in Outstanding Technical Report [pdf].
