Do I have to declare a major when I apply?
No, you do not have to declare a major when you apply. First-year science students are admitted to the Mellon College of Science and not to a degree program. Declaration of a degree program occurs midway through the second semester of your first year. Read a student's account of deciding her major.
How do students decide what major is right for them?
During your first year there will be plenty of information available and people to talk to:
Your first-year advisor and departmental advisors
Your first year science instructors
First-year mini science seminar courses
Department colloquia
Meet Your Major programs
Involvement with student departmental/professional societies
Can I combine science/mathematics with my other interests?
Yes and here are some of the ways that our students have been doing this:
You can pursue from across the university...

The Bachelor of Science and Arts (BSA) Degree this is a degree program for students who are naturally gifted in both the arts and the sciences and allows for the combining of talents in these areas. |
Can I change my major?
We understand that students interest can change after they enter college and we do our very best in helping them achieve their goals. Students have the flexibility of transferring within MCS or between colleges at Carnegie Mellon. Each college has its own procedures for assessing transfer applicants. Here is a student's perspective on changing majors.
