Pittsburgh’s friendly atmosphere comes in part from people’s love of their own distinctive neighborhoods. Apartments can be found for $400–$600 per month, especially if sharing with a roommate. Here is some of what you can find easily accessible from Carnegie Mellon.
Where many students live:
- Universities, bookstores, restaurants, clubs, the Carnegie Museums, and Schenley Park, explore Oakland.
- Mix of bookstores, cafes, movies, restaurants, eclectic shops including fair trade goods and Judaica, and Frick Park, try Squirrel Hill.
- Restaurants, bars, galleries, shopping, cafes, specialty foods, and Victorian architecture, see Shadyside.
- Restaurants, cafes, bars, movies, body art, alternative art spaces, look at the South Side.
- Bars, restaurants, coffeehouses, Italian specialty stores, check out Bloomfield.
Many interesting diversions, but not as much affordable housing:
- Old-style market district plus clubs, taverns, brewpubs, gay bars, and late night restaurants, try the Strip District.
- Andy Warhol Museum, National Aviary, Carnegie Science Center, Penn Brewery, visit the North Side.
- Fine arts, festivals, independent movies, outdoor ice skating, boating, explore Downtown.
- Best views, top restaurants, cable-car inclines, see Mt. Washington.
