MCS Policy on Faculty Searches
Adopted by the Dean 29 March 2000
Each time a faculty search is initiated, the following information must be provided to the Dean's office before the
advertisements are placed:
- A list of the search committee members must be provided to the Dean's Office. Search Committees must be as diverse as
possible. Representatives of both junior and senior faculty and of different opinions and subdisciplines with the
Department should be taken in consideration when forming the committee. Search committees should include members from
outside of the recruiting department or from outside MCS. If no outside member is present on a search committee, a written
explanation must be provided to the dean. If no Carnegie Mellon faculty are deemed appropriate as outside committee
members, faculty at the University of Pittsburgh could be considered.
- Each search committee Chair must provide an official statement describing the plan to assure that a diversified search
will take place. The plan must be approved by the Dean before the advertisement for the position is placed. The plan
should include available information on the predicted demographics of the pool of candidates in the subdisciplines being
recruited. It should also contain a brief discussion of strategies for reaching the whole pool of potential candidates and
a list of contacts and advertisement distribution areas. The discussion should, for example, include strategies for
contacting members of underrepresented groups and institutions known for training women and minority group members, and
lists documenting such individuals and organizations.
- A list of resources/commitments needed to secure the hire must be discussed by the Department Head, Dean and Provost
before the search commences. Preferably, the estimated costs for each hire should be discussed a year in advance of the
anticipated date that the new hire would join the faculty. This is especially important when large set-up costs and/or
renovations are involved. University capital budgets are determined a year in advance and it will be much easier to plan
and obtain approval if we coordinate with the University fiscal year appropriations in making our requests.
At the end of each search, a report on the success or failure of these efforts must be filed with the Dean.
