I. SUSAN HENRY LEAVING CMU

Susan Henry will be stepping down as Dean of MCS to take a position at Cornell. Her successor has not yet been named. David Owen will continue as Associate Dean of Faculty and Graduate Affairs until a new Dean of MCS is in place.

II. 2000-2001 GSAC

The members GSAC were invited by David to continue serving in the 2000-2001 academic year. Members are to notify David of their intentions as soon as possible. No formal procedure exists for replacing members who decide to step down. Replacements will be invited to join on an as-needed basis by David in consultation with the members of GSAC. Dorothy Farrell's successor from Physics will be Abhijit Brahme, a first year student.

III. MCS GRADUATE SOCIAL EVENT

Friday, September 22 was identified as the target date for the MCS cocktail party and poster session. Attendance is estimated at 100. Rangos Hall, in the University Center, will be reserved if possible. As an incentive to increase participation in the poster session, there will be a drawing for a small monetary prize to be used as a travel stipend (probably about $200). Aimee will organize the poster session, including the drafting of some guidelines for participation in the session. She will solicit help as needed from individuals in each department and from other GSAC members.

IV. UPDATED DRAFT POLICY ON DEPARTMENTAL OMBUDSPERSON

The updated draft policy on departmental ombudspersons was reviewed for the final time by GSAC. David will present it at the next department head's meeting.

V. REPORT TO SUSAN HENRY

GSAC reviewed the report to Susan Henry that David compiled using information provided by GSAC members. No changes were suggested, so David will give the report to Susan to present to the Advisory Board or to pass to her replacement.

VI. CALIBRATING EXPECTATIONS: LISTS OF COMPARABLE PROGRAMS

GSAC members provided David with lists of graduate programs comparable to those in MCS. The comparable programs will be used to develop benchmarking data, and ultimately to provide incoming graduate students with better information on what to expect from their time at CMU.

VII. SCHEDULING FALL 2000 MEETINGS

GSAC members will send David their fall course schedules so he can begin planning meetings for the fall semester. The first meeting will be held during the first week of classes.
