I. MCS CAREER EVENT
The MCS Graduate Career Seminar will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2002. The Mellon Institute Auditorium, Social, and Conference Rooms have been reserved from 2:00 - 8:00 PM.
Ayse volunteered to coordinate a meeting with a subcommittee from GSAC and Renee Starek to discuss planning the career seminar. The group should present a list of companies to Renee that students are interested in, as well as types of non-academic careers that should be represented. See that lists of TOC participants that Katya e-mailed on 1/18/02 for reference, but feel free to add other companies you are interested in. Ideas for the format of the event should also be discussed at this meeting. One idea is to have the company representatives present information about their companies/careers in the auditorium and then for the entire group to move upstairs to the social/conference rooms for refreshments and a chance to talk informally and ask questions.
The career event subcommittee has the following members:
Final decisions were made about the catering order for this year's poster session. More vegetarian options and a wider variety of h'ors d'oeuvres were included.
The event begins at 6:30, so GSAC members should plan to arrive at 6:00 to make sure that everything is set up. Each member will take a half hour shift at the door to check ID's and keep track of how many people attend. At 8:00, Gregg will announce the drawing and winners of the prizes.
Printed invitations (the flyers posted around Mellon and Wean/Doherty) should be distributed by the GSAC members to all MCS graduate students the week before the event (January 28). Katya will also send an e-mail reminder on January 31.
GSAC members should find out how many posters will be presented and check with their departments to see if foam boards are available for backing. If there are not enough foam boards, please let Katya know so more can be purchased. Tacks for attaching the posters will be available.
III. OTHER BUSINESS
Pushan and Marc are planning an MCS Happy Hour for Friday, April 12. They will contact GSA to see if they can get extra funding for he event. The Mellon Institute Social and Conference Rooms have been reserved from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. Free beer and pizza for all MCS graduate students!
If you know about any events, awards, or other interesting items involving graduate students in MCS that would be appropriate to publish in the Graduate Times, please let Katya know. The deadline to submit items for the next issue is February 8.
Our next meeting is tenatively scheduled for Thursday, February 7, from 3:00 - 4:30 in WEH 8325. Katya will send an e-mail to confirm this.
