MCS College Council
Minutes for meeting of Friday, February 19, 1999

1. INTERCOLLEGIATE DEGREE IN MATHEMATICAL AND STATISTICAL SCIENCES (J.
Greenberg)

This degree program will be administered under the joint Science and
Humanities Scholars Program between MCS and H&SS. It will probably
eventually replace the current B.S. in Mathematical Sciences:
Concentration in Statistics.

COLLEGE COUNCIL ACTION: The degree program was passed.

2. CREATION OF HONORS SECTIONS OF PHYSICS I & II FOR SCIENCE STUDENTS
(R. Swendsen)

33-131 Honors Modern Mechanics and 33-132 Honors Electricity, Magnetism,
and Waves will be honors-level alternatives to 33-111/112 Physics I/II
for Science Students. The primary audiences will be MCS and SCS
students who will ask for and be selected for admission to the course;
qualified CIT students will be allowed to enroll on a space-available basis.

COLLEGE COUNCIL ACTION: The courses were approved. Eric Grotzinger will
discuss advising issues for this honors sequence with the Committee for
Undergraduate Affairs.

3. PROPOSED CHEMISTRY COURSE NUMBER CHANGES (C. VanDyke for R. McCullough)

Per the recommendation of College Council, Chemistry asked to revise
some of their undergraduate course numbers so they better reflect the
level of the courses (i.e., 100-199 freshman, 200-299 sophomore, 300-399
junior, 400-599 junior/senior, 600-699 advanced undergraduate, 700+
graduate). Only one of the new numbers (09-202 Undergraduate Seminar
II) is the same as an old number for another course (09-202 Issues in
Chemistry, now numbered 09-204). College Council agreed that this would
cause minimal confusion.

COLLEGE COUNCIL ACTION: The course number changes were approved.

4. DOUBLE MAJOR IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES AND PSYCHOLOGY (W. Brown)

This program was designed to streamline and coordinate the curriculum
for students interested in combining biological sciences and psychology
in their undergraduate degrees. Currently there are six different
curricula that could lead to a version of this dual major; this program
replaces these with a single set of requirements that will lead to a
double major between Biological Sciences and Psychology. Students housed
in H&SSwill earn a B.S. in Psychology and Biological
Sciences. Students housed in MCS will earn a B.S. in Biological
Sciences and Psychology. The main change for MCS students is that they
can replace Physical Chemistry with 36-309 Experimental Design
for Behavioral and Social Sciences, and their laboratory
requirements are reduced by one semester.

COLLEGE COUNCIL ACTION: The program was passed.

5. COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY OPTION FOR THE B.S. DEGREE (W. Brown)

The Department of Biological Sciences designed this option for students
interested in the growing field of computational biology who don't want
to give up many advanced biology courses for computer science and math
requirements. This option will be added to the set of six options that
currently exist for the B.S. degree.

COLLEGE COUNCIL ACTION: The option was passed.

6. INDIVIDUALIZED M.S. IN COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY (W. Brown)

In collaboration with the Department of Computer Science, the Department
of Biological Sciences designed a master's-level curriculum in
Computational Biology for Edward Roques. If successful, it could easily
evolve into a 2-year master's program and/or a fifth-year option for
Carnegie Mellon undergraduates whereby students could earn this master's
degree in the year following their undergraduate program.

COLLEGE COUNCIL ACTION: The proposal was passed.

7. FACULTY DEVELOPMENT - SENIOR FACULTY PLANNING REVIEW (D. Owen)

The College Council reviewed and discussed CIT's evaluation report on
their senior faculty review program as well as written remarks by Robert
Griffiths of Physics.

COLLEGE COUNCIL ACTION: These two documents will be put on the web, and
the faculty will be asked to review and comment on the senior faculty
planning review proposal one more time in light of the new information.
College Council will vote on the proposal at the next meeting.
