Department of Physics head co-organized a conference on high energy particle physics in Beijing, China

Fred Gilman, Head of the Department of Physics, was co-organizer with Chen Hesheng, Director of the Instituteof High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences,
of a conference in Beijing on June 11–12. This meeting focused on the question of whether parity (mirror reflection) — a symmetry that does not hold in the subatomic world as we know it up to now — could be a symmetry at the energies that will be observable in the next generation of accelerators. Last year, Gilman and Chen also co-organized a workshop that brought US and Chinese scientists together to explore increased collaboration in particle physics. The result was a joint neutrino experiment to be carried out near Hong Kong and increased collaboration at the new electron-positron collider just being completed in Beijing. More information about this year's conference is found at http://pprhe07.ihep.ac.cn/.
