MCS Faculty Participating in Science Writing Conference

From Oct. 22 through Oct. 26, close to 300 reporters and science writers will be in Pittsburgh attending the annual meeting of the National Association of Science Writers (NASW), a professional development workshop. Many will remain to attend the annual meeting of the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW), which is presenting a program of panels on timely science news topics. Carnegie Mellon is hosting the CASW meeting, and several MCS faculty will be participating in the joint conference.

On Sunday, Oct. 23, Eric Ahrens, Tiziana Di Matteo, Dannie Durand, Terry Collins, Fred Gilman, Genevieve Sauve and Helmut Vogel will each host a lunch table at a “science in society” luncheon. An anticipated 8 to 10 science reporters and writers will be seated with each faculty member to chat with them about their research.

On Tuesday, Oct. 25, Alison Barth, Justin Crowley and Nathan Urban will host a tour of their laboratories to introduce reporters to the methods they use to determine how cells of the live brain coordinate learning.
