Randall Feenstra, Professor of Physics, has received a 2-year, $2.2 million extension on a DURINT grant (Defense University Research Initiative on Nanotechnology), which funds 14 investigators at Carnegie Mellon, the University of Pittsburgh, Virginia Commonwealth University, the State University of New York at Albany, Wright State University and the University of South Florida. The grant supports research on the production, characterization and use of porous semiconductors for applications including catalysis, biotechnology and epitaxy (the growth of one crystal layer atop another so that both layers are structurally aligned). Studies of chemical catalysis with porous semiconductors promise to advance the design of fuel cells and gas sensors. Porous semiconductors are also being explored for their potential use as implantable biosensors utilizing microdialysis. Epitaxial growth studies are critical in designing next generation optical devices and high-speed electronics.
