Carnegie Mellon University

Commencement receives standout updates

For the 2018 commencement ceremony, the university wanted to do something different to set it apart from years prior, while creating reusable visual statements for future ceremonies.

UCM’s Creative teams collaborated with University Events to develop ideas for more visual interest and engagement in highly trafficked welcome areas in the Cohon University Center. After factoring in the budget and narrowing down creative possibilities, the teams designed new assets that would bring color and life to spaces like never before — all while serving practical purposes of wayfinding, entrance denotation and entertainment.

The photo and video teams composited a new look for the Carnegie Mellon seal to be used on programming materials for all seven schools and colleges. Additional assets included pre-commencement promotional materials, a photo booth with branded keepsake printouts, live chalk art, floor tape, hanging signage, outdoor decals, a stylized pre-show video and a special audience crane shot.

The university’s new attractions delighted guests, set a new precedent for commencement ceremonies to come and, most importantly, inspired CMU pride during its students’ most important celebration.
