Jahanian, Acquisti Deliver Calls To Action at NSF Meeting on Cybersecurity, Privacy
January 12, 2017
Carnegie Mellon University Provost Farnam Jahanian called for continuing investments in cybersecurity to meet the evolving challenges in securing cyberspace. He delivered his remarks during a keynote speech at the National Science Foundation's Secure and Trustworthy CyberSpace (SaTC) Principal Investigators' Meeting. The biennial forum of the SaTC research community, held Jan. 9-11 in Arlington, Va., included top experts in academia, government and industry.

Carnegie Mellon University to Expand Enrollment in Business, Computer Science Programs

Provost Farnam Jahanian confirmed Carnegie Mellon's plans to expand undergraduate enrollment in computer science, a major regularly ranked among the top computer science programs in the nation, from 130 to 175 students. The university, which is building a new home for its Tepper School of Business, will also expand undergraduate enrollment in its business program from 80 to 140 students per class.

CMU, City to Lead Creation of New National Initiative

Carnegie Mellon University and the City of Pittsburgh have been tapped to lead a new national alliance to research, develop and deploy innovative technologies to address critical challenges facing urban areas. Announced Monday at an event at the White House, the MetroLab Network includes 20 metro areas and more than 25 universities. CMU Provost Farnam Jahanian and Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto were in Washington, D.C., to attend the announcement.

U.S. Labor Secretary Speaks at A. Philip Randolph Institute Workforce Development Program

U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez traveled to Pittsburgh recently to highlight cutting-edge workforce training programs at Carnegie Mellon University. He then offered remarks to the graduates of the A. Philip Randolph Institute “Breaking the Chains of Poverty” Workforce Development Program. Perez joined Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale and Carnegie Mellon University Provost Farnam Jahanian to meet with start-up companies supported by the New App for Making It in America initiative.

Farnam Jahanian Receives Computing Research Association Distinguished Service Award
June 22, 2015
On June 20, CMU Provost Farnam Jahanian was presented with the Computing Research Association’s 2015 Distinguished Service Award at the annual Association of Computing Machinery Awards Banquet in San Francisco. The Distinguished Service Award is presented to a person whose leadership and service in government affairs, professional societies, publications or conferences has had a major impact on computing research. The CRA selected Jahanian for his work as the National Science Foundation's assistant director for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) from 2011 to 2014, during which time he was instrumental in the creation of numerous federal computer science initiatives.

Dr. Farnam Jahanian joins QCRI's Scientific Advisory Committee

Dr. Farnam Jahanian has been appointed as a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF).  An accomplished scientist and successful entrepreneur, Dr. Jahanian was recently named provost of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and has more than 25 years of experience in research and higher education. QCRI Executive Director Dr. Ahmed K. Elmagarmid said Dr. Jahanian’s experience and insight will be of great value to QCRI.
