Carnegie Mellon University
Dear Colleagues,

We are writing to announce several important changes pertaining to the Office of Disability Resources, including the establishment of a new, on-campus location and integrated testing center for this vital office.

The Office of Disability Resources, which had been part of Equal Opportunity Services (EOS) in the Human Resources department of the Division of Operations, has recently moved into the Office of the Provost and will now exclusively manage accommodations and support for CMU students and visitors. Human Resources will continue to manage support services for faculty and staff with disabilities.

The Office of Disability Resources has also moved to an on-campus location at Margaret Morrison Plaza A30, which includes a new integrated testing center. This critical investment in our campus infrastructure is reflective of our ongoing commitment to an inclusive and accessible CMU education for all students.

Bringing this student-facing resource into the Provost’s Office not only strengthens its connection to our academic mission, but also helps to promote a more holistic CMU experience for our students with disabilities.

To lead this office in its new focus, we are pleased to welcome Catherine Getchell as the new Director of Disability Resources, following the retirement of Larry Powell. Catherine reports directly to Amy Burkert, Vice Provost for Education. Catherine comes to CMU from the State of Pennsylvania’s Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) where she was a counselor and then District Administrator for twelve years. During her time at OVR, Catherine worked on behalf of individuals with physical, sensory, cognitive and emotional disabilities, an experience that has allowed her to make a smooth transition to her work here at CMU. Catherine can be reached via getchell@cmu.edu or access@andrew.cmu.edu.

We invite all faculty and staff to welcome Catherine and visit the new facility during a Disability Resources Open House this Friday, January 27 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Margaret Morrison Plaza A30, 5136 Margaret Morrison Street. This event is an opportunity to learn how our community can take advantage of this resource to enhance the CMU experience for those individuals with disabilities. We ask that you please forward this invitation to your colleagues and faculty across the university.

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank Larry Powell for his 16 years of service to the Office of Disability Resources. We also recognize our colleagues in HR for their continued work to support equal opportunity and access across the institution.

If you have any questions about this restructuring, please do not hesitate to contact our offices.

Warm regards,

Farnam Jahanian, Provost and Chief Academic Officer
Rodney McClendon, Vice President for Operations
