Carnegie Mellon University

Dear Colleagues,

We are writing to announce an important realignment of reporting units under the Office of the Provost and the Division of Operations. The following changes will take effect January 1, 2017.

The Division of Enrollment Services, currently housed under Operations and reporting to Rodney McClendon, will be moved into the Office of the Provost. This transition will include six departments: The HUB, University Registrar’s Office, Student Financial Aid, the Student Accounts Office, Summer Studies, and Enrollment Systems. Lisa Krieg, associate vice president and director of Enrollment Services, will now report directly to Provost Jahanian. Lisa will maintain her university co-chair role for the Middle States Reaccreditation effort culminating in 2018.

Additionally, the Steel City Naval ROTC program will also report through the Office of the Provost, supervised by Amy Burkert, Vice Provost for Education, with operations continuing to flow through Enrollment Services.

Bringing these two units into the academic leadership structure is a natural realignment for CMU’s central administration. For example, Financial Aid and Admissions will now both report to the Provost, which will aid ongoing strategic alliances for these interrelated areas. Similarly, the Navy ROTC program, which trains students to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship, and government, continues to be an essential component of our academic mission.  And the University Registrar has long-served in close collaboration with all academic units for policy planning and implementation, classroom management, grading, and system maintenance.

The Office of Risk Initiatives and the Campus Services group, under the direction of Greg Billy, will remain within the Division of Operations.  The services provided by these units are best aligned with the mission of the recently restructured Division of Operations.

All of these services are critical to the success of Carnegie Mellon University, and we are confident that these changes will only have positive effects on the staff and the communities they serve.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many members of these teams for their hard work – work that touches on so many aspects of the CMU experience. In particular, we’d like to acknowledge Lisa Krieg and Greg Billy for their continued leadership.

If you have any questions, please reach out to your supervisor and feel free to contact us directly with any concerns.

Warm regards,

Farnam Jahanian, Provost and Chief Academic Officer
Rodney McClendon, Vice President for Operations
