Statement of Academic Priorities

Carnegie Mellon is a remarkable institution with deep traditions in promoting excellence in education, research and scholarship and a well-deserved reputation for transfer of knowledge and ideas to benefit society. The way in which science and technology are intertwined with social science, humanities and the arts at CMU creates a rich intellectual and nurturing environment for learning, discovery and creative expression. As the chief academic officer for an institution committed to global citizenship, I am devoted to ensuring students and faculty enjoy an environment conducive to innovative teaching and learning by prioritizing interdisciplinary scholarship and research, greater inclusion of diverse students, faculty and staff, and efficient and transparent operations. Our commitment to excellence, academic freedom and service to society underpins our academic priorities:

Enriching the quality of student experience: CMU attracts extraordinarily gifted students who join our community to work with exceptional faculty and dedicated staff. We are committed to the personal and intellectual growth of our students in a diverse and nurturing academic community. Learning occurs not only in the classroom, but also through experiential opportunities, participation in research and engagement in campus life and the communities in which we work and live. We are dedicated to providing an environment that encourages our students to imagine broadly, think critically and work collaboratively to advance knowledge and improve the human condition.

Commitment to innovation in learning: Education has been called “a great equalizer of the conditions of men  the balance wheel of the social machinery." The university’s primary educational goal is to provide students deep disciplinary knowledge and to cultivate skills for lifelong learning. Advances in educational technologies, catalyzed by CMU’s world-leading research into learning science, provide extraordinary opportunities for new pedagogical methods and modes of learning. Our faculty lead new innovations that have the potential to enhance learning outcomes through more personalized and customized education, expansion of curricular and experiential learning programs, as well as greater access and more effective delivery.

Excellence in scholarship and research:  We recognize the importance of supporting the comprehensive nature of research universities, spanning the full spectrum of academic and professional disciplines from the physical, life and social sciences, to computing and engineering, and to the arts and humanities. While we sustain and enhance excellence in scholarship and research in deep disciplinary areas, we will continue to cultivate and nurture CMU’s long tradition of faculty-led interdisciplinary and collaborative pursuits.

And as we achieve great things, we position CMU as the academic destination for faculty and students seeking a global culture of innovation and entrepreneurship and for opportunities to learn, conceive, collaborate, launch and lead in new endeavors.

Commitment to diversity and inclusion: Diversity and inclusion must remain a top priority for the university. We recognize that cultivating diverse perspectives and promoting inclusion will breed the intellectual vitality essential for the health and progress of our campus community. The campus leadership must continue to set a tone that stresses the critical importance of diversity and must hold ourselves and community members accountable for progress. Achieving breakthroughs requires visible commitment at all levels of the institution to recruit, retain and advance diverse world-class talent supported by sustainable programmatic initiatives.
