EPM Applet for Predicting Patterns of Exchange in Economic Exchange Networks

This applet used to compute EPM values for equal valued resource networks. You can create an unequal valued resource network, but the applet will not take this into consideration.

Instructions

The applet consists of three areas: Edges, Nodes, and First Exch Prob.
Only the Edges and Nodes areas are where values are input.  The other two areas are output areas.

Step 1 (Inputing the Network):

The Edges area is the list of edges or relations that make up the network.  These values are input as the node
pairs that are connected via the relation.

(Note: Input values are case sensitive.)
Examples:

To input the following network:
A-B

Put in the following values:
A,B

or

B,A

To input in the following network:
A-B-C-D

Put in the following values:
A,B
B,C
C,D

or

A,B
C,B
D,C

etc...

The Nodes area contains the list of nodes within the network.

(Note: Input values are case sensitive)
Examples:

For the following network:
A-B

Input values:
A
B

or

B
A

For the following network:
A-B-C-D

Input values:
A
B
C
D

or

C
A
D
B

etc...

Step 2 (Computing the EPM Values):

After inputting the network, the method of determining the EPM values can be changed based on the settings chosen.

The first settings are labeled Ech on Breaks and No Ech on Breaks.  If Ech on Breaks is selected then exchanges are allowed to take place along break points in the network (see Girard and Borch 2003).  If No Ech on Breaks is selected then no exchanges can occur along breaks, though the relations are still used to compute EPM values.

After this are three groups of values that may be changed.  They are grouped by network type.  Changing the values will affect what relations are more likely to exchange over others.  High numbers (i.e. 1.0) mean more resistance to exchanging, while lower numbers (i.e. 0.5) mean less resistance to exchanging.

After the method is chosen click the "Compute" button located at the bottom of the applet.

Step 3 (Reading the Results):

The results are displayed in the First Exch Prob. This lists by relation the probability that relation will exchange first.
