Profile

Professor Zimmermann has more than 40 years experience in academic and industrial  research, especially in high frequency engineering, radio astronomy, computer architectures, embedded systems, High Level Synthesis (MIMOLA), CAD for VLSI, and software engineering for embedded systems. The latter two research projects have been part of two Sonderforschungsbereiche, sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft for the total of 24 years.

Over the last 12 years his research interest has more and more focussed on the control and simulation of buildings, as the result of a close cooperation with the Center for Building Performance and Diagnostics (CBPD), School of Architecture, CMU. Professor Zimmermann and his research group have shown that object oriented and agent based modeling technologies can be well applied in this domain to model structure and behavior of building systems and to automatically generate software for prototyping and simulation from such models.  The   Robert L. Preger Intelligent Workplace of the CBPD has been the object of many case studies.

As  a result of this cooperation it became clear that building system models have to include workplaces and user activities. This integration of the different domains in a building has been  the subject of the research of Professor Zimmermann since his retirement. His far out goal is a virtual building laboratory.
