Recommended Security Practice

  • Disable the Simple File Sharing feature on Windows XP machines. You can do so, by clicking on Start→Control Panel →Folder Options →Tab View→ Uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing"→Apply→OK .
  • Install and update anti-virus and anti-spyware software frequently. Please visit Computing Services website on operating systems update instructions for Microsoft XP, Microsoft Vista, Mac OS X Version.
  • Install and maintain your personal firewall updates. If properly configured, Windows XP and Windows 2003 provide adequate firewall protection.
  • Adhere to Carnegie Mellon's copyright policy and copyright violation guidelines. Students should also read the Residence Hall and Dedicated Remote Access Guidelines to familiarize themselves with issues and penalties for copyright violation.
  • Adhere to the Cyber Security Pledge when it comes to monitoring bandwidth usage, not sharing copyrighted material and physically securing your computer.
