Security Advisory: Upgrade Now - Windows XP Support Ends April 8

WHOM DOES THIS AFFECT?
Computers running Microsoft Windows XP Operating System

SUMMARY
Microsoft plans to end support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014.  There have been a number of advisories from various sources indicating that shortly after the end of support, a rash of malware and exploits will be released targeting the XP operating system.

Accordingly, ISO will begin scanning for XP computers on campus or connected to campus services on Thursday, March 20, 2014.   When found, ISO will notify the users and appropriate departmental IT staff via the Network Incident Security Console (NISC).  ISO will continue to monitor for attacks and exploited systems, which may result in suspensions, or limiting access to certain resources.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

  • Consider upgrading to Windows 8.1 or Windows 7, if you have a personal computer running Windows XP. Follow Microsoft's instructions to upgrade. Links for upgrade instruction are provided under "Additional Information" below.
  • Staff and faculty should consult with their department regarding  any systems for work related purposes.
  • Before you begin, back up your files and documents to prevent data loss if anything goes wrong during the upgrade.
  • In addition to university owned computers, remember to upgrade your home computer and any virtual computing systems that run Windows XP.
