Administration Plan
The CIRP freshman survey is administered at residence hall floor meetings during freshmen orientation. Beginning in the fall of 2009, it will be administered twice each three years in alternation with the Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE).
Brief Description
For thirty-eight years the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) has engaged in a longitudinal study of the American Higher Education System. Established in 1966 at the American Council on Education, the CIRP is now administered by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI). The CIRP survey asks students to respond to a variety of questions regarding demographic characteristics, secondary school activities, college academic preparation, college choice and plans, college financing, future activities and goals, and political views and opinions.
Carnegie Mellon has participated in the CIRP nearly every year since its inception. Each August, the CIRP is distributed to freshman during orientation and the response rate is typically in excess of 80%. Historic data for the CIRP survey is available in electronic form for the years spanning 1992 to the present.
HERI provides aggregate results that compare Carnegie Mellon respondents with respondents at all survey institutions nationwide and with respondents at private, highly selective survey institutions. The Office of Institutional Research & Analysis also creates detailed descriptive and inferential analyses using the provided raw response data.
