  • All First-year and Senior students

Administration Plan

  • Triennial distribution to allow for longitudinal study.  We plan to look at differences in response in first-year vs. senior students.

Brief Description
  • The NSSE is based on a large body of literature in higher education that draws direct correlations between particular classroom activities and specific faculty and peer practices to successful undergraduate student outcomes.

Relationship to Other Instruments

  • Our planned administration of the sister surveys of the NSSE, the FSSE (Faculty Survey of Student Engagement) will allow for comparisons between students’ and faculty perceptions of classroom activities.  Administration of the BCSSE (Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement) will allow for comparisons between high school and college engagement in academic activities.

Survey Results
  • The NSSE administration distributes a full report for Carnegie Mellon’s responses as well as the national results. In addition to the overall results, we will also receive reports by class, college (or department within CFA), race, citizenship status, and cumulative QPA.

Distribution Plan
  • The results will be published in the fall of each administration year.  Both the survey instrument and report will be available to the entire Carnegie Mellon Community through an authenticated link on the IR&A website.
