Administration Plan

  • Carnegie Mellon first participated in the Triennial HERI Faculty Survey in Fall 2004.  Participation is planned in the Fall of 2007.  We subsequently plan participation every six years.

Brief Description
  • The HERI Faculty Survey is designed to provide colleges and universities with timely information about the attitudes, experiences, concerns, job satisfaction, workload, teaching practices, and professional activities of collegiate faculty and administrators. Information resulting from the survey can be used to facilitate self study and accreditation activities; inform campus planning and policy analysis; enhance faculty development programs; and improve students' educational experiences.

The 2004-05 Faculty Survey was the ninth national survey of faculty conducted by HERI-the sixth in a triennial series initiated in 1989. Since 1989, over 300,000 faculty at more than 1,100 two-year and four-year colleges nationwide have participated in this research.

Relationship to Other Instruments

  • There is a great deal of question overlap between the CIRP Freshman Survey and the HERI Faculty Survey.  Additionally, optional questions added by Carnegie Mellon align with the End of Year Student Surveys as well as the Staff Survey.

Survey Results
  • HERI provides us with aggregate results that compare Carnegie Mellon responses to those at other participating institutions.

Distribution Plan
  • The survey instrument and the aggregate Carnegie Mellon reports are available to the entire Carnegie Mellon Community through an authenticated link on the IR&A website.
