Study Abroad and Internships

International education is an important part of Carnegie Mellon University's global mission. Students who major in International Relations are encouraged to explore the wide range of initiatives both in the United States and abroad that facilitate the exchange of knowledge across international boundaries. Carnegie Mellon's Study Abroad Office is the first place to go to explore these options. The office offers students information sessions, individual advising, resources and programming to prepare for a successful study abroad experience.

The Greenpeace Organizing Term in either San Francisco or Washington, D.C. is another option—a semester-long program with action, travel and training. Applications are now being accepted for Spring 2010. Students learn leadership skills and receive training in grassroots organizing, media, direct action, and campaign strategy. Travel with Greenpeace on campaign trips and on the Greenpeace Expedition.

Internships that offer students a global experience are also a terrific way to expand students' horizons.

White House Internship programStudents are encouraged to apply for the White House Internship program. This program is designed to mentor and cultivate young leaders of today and tomorrow, fostering a continued commitment to public service. Click the image at right for more information.

Another option includes the literally hundreds of opportunities for internships abroad. A first stop is the university's Career Center, which offers lots of tips on finding both paid and unpaid internship opportunities. The H&SS Career Center's website has a whole section on study abroad and internship opportunites. Finally, students can explore websites on the internet themselves.

The International Relations weekly newsletter regularly includes announcements of those internships that have international interest. Many of these internships are with organizations in Washington, DC. Students are encouraged to use the newsletter archives to identify these internships opportunities.
