Global Readiness
Carnegie Mellon University has long been known internationally for its leadership in research, education, scholarship and technology transfer. Recognizing the increasing global integration of individuals, cultures, organizations and societies, Carnegie Mellon is committed to expanding and strengthening its position as a university that pursues great ideas and difficult problems, where ever they may be.
Global Patterns of Work and Collaboration
Globalization and emerging patterns of work, telecommunications, and collaborative development of products and intellectual services are all important forces shaping the early years of the 21st century. In an increasingly interconnected and interdependent global economy, individuals must learn and adapt new skills to remain fully engaged and to take advantage of new and emerging opportunities, wherever and whenever they may present themselves. Indeed, living and working as effective citizens in a global society requires learning with an international perspective.
Thus, preparing students to participate in the emerging global opportunities of tomorrow is essential to the university's mission. Given the global nature of software product development, delivery of consulting and software services, students studying Information Systems at Carnegie Mellon have many opportunities to broaden their international perspectives through optional coursework, semesters of study abroad and working on team-based projects with students in other countries.
Opportunities to Learn
Students of Information Systems may choose, as elective courses, a wide range of courses in international and global business, economics, politics, culture, history and modern language. As an optional content area, students majoring in Information Systems may elect to complete the Global Systems content area, completing courses in Global Systems, Global Project Management and two additional approved courses in international business, international technology development or policy, culture, history or languages.
The Information Systems program also acts as academic home for the university-wide minor, Global Systems and Management. With more depth than the content area, the minor allows students to develop, in depth, their interests and skills in globally oriented studies. A semester of study abroad may be applied to completion of the minor requirements.
Information Systems is offered as a major bachelor of science degree program at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. Students in good academic standing wishing to study Information Systems, Computer Science or Business at CMU in Qatar may do so with the approval of the appropriate offices in Pittsburgh and Doha.
Information Systems at Carnegie Mellon has a special exchange agreement with the School of Information Systems at Singapore Management University. Students wishing to take advantage of this opportunity should speak with the unit's student advisor, Mr. Steve Pajewski.
Carnegie Mellon's Office of International Education offers advice and full assistance to students wishing to study abroad.
