Admission to the Information Systems Program
Students are admitted into the Information Systems Program in three ways:
- Direct admission when applying to Carnegie Mellon;
- Internal transfer as a current student;
- Admission as a transfer student to Carnegie Mellon from another institution.
Direct admission:
Prospective Carnegie Mellon students may choose to apply by checking the box for Information Systems on the University application form. For further details, contact the Office of Admission at (412) 268-2082, Warner Hall 101.
Internal transfer:
Current students who wish to study IS must apply for transfer into the program (since it is not available as a second major or minor). Students may apply anytime other than three weeks each semester: the two weeks prior to Registration week and Registration Week. AAC advisors will be meeting with current advisees during those weeks. Students may apply in the middle of their second semester (at the earliest). The application deadline for any given semester is the last day of final exams in that semester.
All applicants must meet with the Information Systems program advisor to review the IS program and discuss the match of the IS major with their goals and interests.
Applicants who are H&SS students must also meet with their H&SS academic advisor to verify that all student records are accurate and up-to-date, and to submit a completed IS application form.
Non-H&SS applicants must also meet with an H&SS advisor at the Academic Advisory Center (Baker Hall A57) and then must apply for internal transfer (IT) into H&SS by completing an H&SS Internal Transfer Application along with the IS application.
Internal transfer guidelines, instructions and forms are available on the H&SS Advisory Center's website, http://www.cmu.edu/hss/advisory-center/transferring/transfer-in.html.
Transfer from another institution:
Interested students need to follow the procedure for external application according to the Office of Admission, (412) 268-2082, Warner Hall 101. We recommend that applicants contact the IS Program's academic advisor to discuss transfer selection criteria.
