Information Systems Program Director's Welcome

Randy S. WeinbergThe Information Systems program at Carnegie Mellon offers students a unique blend of theory, practice and a strong liberal arts education in one package.  Students majoring in Information Systems enjoy opportunities not found at many other universities: opportunities to do real-world research, to interact with world-class faculty and students, and to enjoy the cultural opportunities and diversity usually only found in larger urban areas.

The program in Information Systems attracts students who are interested in applying technology in novel ways to address real problems and opportunities in society.  Look at the Student Projects section of our site and you'll get a sampling of the range of projects, interesting technologies and opportunities our students have addressed.

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, it's our intention to prepare students to participate in emerging opportunities in software systems and services, wherever they may be.  Building on our solid educational core, we encourage students to learn more about world cultures and business through study of global systems development, cross cultural communications, history and languages.  We encourage IS students to consider a study or work abroad experience.

Market demand for IS majors continues to be strong.  Major organizations from around the country and the world recruit CMU IS majors.  Employers value the problem solving orientation, as well as the technical, teamwork, project management and communications skills our students develop while they're here.  See our Return on Your Investment for more of the big picture.

There are many exciting educational opportunities here; we invite you to check us out and see how you can explore your interests at Carnegie Mellon.
