Types of Cards

Carnegie Mellon ID+ Cards

Faculty, staff, and degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for Carnegie Mellon ID+ cards.

These cards identify their holders as members of the campus community for as long as they are employees or degree students at Carnegie Mellon.

  • Faculty and Staff ID+ Card – Faculty and staff can obtain their Carnegie Mellon ID+ Card once they have been entered into the Human Resources Employee Module (HREM). This includes Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) faculty and Temporary Employment Services’ staff.
  • Student ID+ Card-Students can obtain their Carnegie Mellon ID+ Card once they have been entered into the Student Information System with a record for an active semester.  New students entering Carnegie Mellon during the fall semester and who do not begin classes until the beginning of the fall semester may be issued an ID+ card no sooner than August 1st.  If a student will be working on campus prior to the fall semester or if they will be taking preparation classes over the summer an exception to the August 1st date will be made on a case by case basis.  Student cards are deactivated upon the cardholder’s separation from the university.

Employees who receive a faculty or staff Carnegie Mellon card must surrender it to their supervisor upon termination of their employment. Failure to return it will result in the employee being taxed on the value of the Port Authority Transit (PAT) transportation benefits. Supervisors must return collected cards to Human Resources.

Carnegie Mellon Affiliate Cards

Affiliate Cards are available as a courtesy to certain family members of benefits-eligible faculty & staff, student spouses, and registered domestic partners.   Non- degree students, university vendors and contractors, and campus visitors are also eligible for Affiliate Cards. Affiliate Cardholders cannot obtain Affiliate Cards for anyone.  All affiliate cards have a maximum expiration date of one year after the card issue date, and they must be renewed annually in order to confirm the continuing eligibility of the cardholder and their sponsor.

  • Family Members – Benefits-eligible faculty and staff can obtain Affiliate Cards for spouses or domestic partners who meet certain eligibility criteria and for their dependent children (aged 12 to 21).  Faculty and staff members must complete the Request for ID Cards for Family Members/Registered Domestic Partners Form for an initial card.  This form must be approved by Human Resources before using the form at the Card Office.
  • Degree-seeking students can obtain Affiliate Cards for spouses or domestic partners who meet certain eligibility criteria.  Students must provide documentation of their relationship with the sponsored affiliate before an ID can be issued.
  • Visiting Researchers and Scholars – Departments can obtain Affiliate Cards for visiting researchers and scholars who will be on campus for more than three weeks.  It is requested but not required that visiting researchers and scholars requiring an ID Card have a sponsored appointment in the Human Resources Employee Management (HREM) system in order to facilitate the creation of an ID Card account.  There will be an additional $10 fee for requests that are not entered into the HREM system.  Researcher and Scholars that will be entered into HREM must wait until their record is completely processed before requesting a card from the card office.
  • Non-degree Students - Non-degree students can obtain an Affiliate Card that will be valid during the semester(s) in which they are enrolled.
  • Vendors and Contractors - Departments can obtain Affiliate Cards for partnering vendors whose businesses require frequent access to campus buildings, such as Parkhurst and Central Property Services employees.

Vendors and contractors who will be on campus only once or infrequently may obtain a temporary Building Access Card from the Card Office with a sponsoring departments approval.

If an administrative area finds an affiliation other than these, they should contact the Card Office for authorization.
