Card Expiration/Renewal
How long is my ID Card valid?
The expiration date on the ID Card is automatically set to be two years from the date that the card is issued. Our intentions with the two-year expiration date are to minimize risk of fraudulent use of the card within the Port Authority Transit system while maximizing the lifetime of the ID Card.
Why does my ID Card have a two-year expiration date when I will be with the university for longer than that?
The university is required by the Port Authority to print an expiration date on the ID Card. Setting a two-year expiration limits the potential for fraudulent transit use by an individual who may leave the university but does not turn in their ID Card and continues to use it to receive bus privileges.
What happens if I don't renew my ID Card?
An expired card may be used to access campus resources such as parking, building access, University Library System access, or Plaid Ca$h and meal plans. Expired ID Cards will not work for Port Authority Transit or discounts offered by local merchants. Please remember that you are responsible for the ID. If it is confiscated by the Port Authority bus driver due to expiration, you will be charged for a lost ID.
Can I use my current ID Card photo when I have my card renewed?
Yes. You may use your current ID Card photo as long as it is clear and the picture resembles how you look at the time of renewal. ID Card Services reserve the right to request that you take or provide a new picture if the image in our database is no longer reflective of how you currently look.
Can I get a new photo for my ID Card if I don't like the one that is on it now?
Yes. We can take a new photo in The HUB when you come to have your card renewed, or you can upload a digital photo through our ID Photo Submission Application. There is a $5 fee to take a new photo if the ID Card is not expired.
Do I have to come to ID Card Services to renew my ID Card?
Either the cardholder or an authorized designate must come to ID Card Services in The HUB to renew the cardholder's ID Card. If the cardholder wishes to send a designate to renew their card, the cardholder must have completed both an ID Card Request form and an Authorized Designate Renewal form.
Will ID Card Services send ID Cards through Campus Mail?
No. ID Cards are not sent to departments through campus mail. A current ID Card must be surrendered in exchange for a renewed ID Card at the time of card production. Mass distribution via campus mail also does not provide assurance that the ID Card was received by the appropriate cardholder.
