Frequently asked questions

Q. Does this new graphic identity replace the Carnegie Mellon official seal?

A. Under the visual identity program, the official Carnegie Mellon seal is not being replaced, but rather elevated to the use for which it was originally intended — reserved for documents of legal and institutional importance (for example, diplomas, awards, medals, graduation programs, rings, contracts, checks, reunion and pageantry applications, and select merchandise items)

Q. Can I still order customized note-sized memo paper?

A. Yes. Customized 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" notepaper is available and is recommended for internal, informal correspondence and handwritten notes. Official correspondence, especially that targeted to audiences outside the Carnegie Mellon community, is always word-processed onto official letterhead carrying the Carnegie Mellon wordmark.

Q. I serve Carnegie Mellon in two distinctly different capacities. Do I need two different business cards?

A. In cases where incompatible occupations, academic roles or different addresses present potential confusion to the recipient, you should consider maintaining alternate versions of stationery including letterheads and business cards.

Q. Our department made up our own stationery design a few years ago. Does this mean we can't continue using it under the new program?

A. There is only one design for official university letterhead (8-1/2 x 11 paper for business letters, #10 and catalog mailing envelopes, business cards). Any other design is not considered official documentation from Carnegie Mellon University and is not supported by the identity system or the Communications Design Group or University Printing.

If you have questions about using alternative designs on letterhead, please contact Sue Layton, manager of communications design, at suel@andrew.cmu.edu

Q. Can I order stationery that features the thistle, tilted square or Scottie dog mascot on it?

A. This is not official letterhead supported by the university. Please contact Sue Layton, manager of communications design, at suel@andrew.cmu.edu to discuss options for producing stationery (which is limited to one official university design) vs. creating alternative marketing materials that can be designed with your communications objectives in mind.
