What is the ICC Speaking Clinic?

The Speaking Clinic is intended to support students in ICC classes, workshops and seminars by providing a session of individualized coaching on the skills they are learning in classes. The clinic can be thought of as an "office hour" to supplement ICC classroom work. It is not a replacement for ICC classroom work, so students will get most of their language training in ICC classes.

How are students placed into the Speaking Clinic?

There are a limited number of clinic hours available, so placement is determined by need. In most cases, students will be referred by an ICC instructor who is currently working with them. Typical reasons for clinic referrals are additional practice with a specific skill, as a follow-up to feedback after a class or the ITA test, feedback and practice with pronunciation or grammar, etc.

ICC students can also request an appointment, but must 1) have a specific goal and a specific task for the session, and 2) have already attended ICC workshops or seminars (students who are new to the ICC do not begin with the clinic). Requests must be approved by the ICC before students can register for an appointment.

Any additional appointments will be determined by ICC instructors.

Students who are interested in using the Speaking Clinic should contact the ICC to find out if the clinic is appropriate for them. It is also useful to attend Orientation to Individual Work to better understand how individualized work fits in with the larger ICC program (see the ICC semester schedule).
