Early Completion-The HUB - Carnegie Mellon University

Verification of Early Completion

Carnegie Mellon has only three graduation dates (May, August and December), at which time degrees are certified and diplomas are produced for graduates. A student's program completion date may be earlier than his or her graduation date, depending upon when the student completed the requirements for his or her academic program.

Students must send a request for verification of early program completion to the University Registrar's Office. Students will need to e-mail their request to uro-verifications@andrew.cmu.edu.

Students must include the following information:

  • Subject: Early Program Completion Verification
  • Student Name
  • Mailing Address for Verification Letter (or fax #)

Please see below for specific guidelines by class level.

Undergraduates

Students may complete their program early if they are only enrolled in mini-1 or mini-3 or summer-1/mini-5 coursework. These students will be considered completed on the date that grades are due for those minis/sessions. Departments can indicate this to the University Registrar's Office. However, validation will be obtained from the SIS course registration. Departments must certify their students for graduation prior to the production of the verification.

Masters Students

Course-Based Masters Program

Students may complete their program early if they are only enrolled in mini-1 or mini-3 or summer-1/mini-5 coursework. These students will be considered completed on the date grades are due for those minis/sessions. Departments can indicate this to the University Registrar's Office. However, validation will be obtained from actual SIS course registration. Departments must certify their students for graduation prior to the production of the verification.

Research-Based Masters Program

Students may complete their program early when they defend their master's thesis. These students will be considered completed on their thesis defense date. Departments can indicate this to the University Registrar's Office. A copy of the front page of the student thesis, signed by the thesis defense committee must be submitted to Jamie Brandon, University Registrar's Office, Warner Hall A19. This date information is entered into the SIS for record-keeping. Departments must certify their students for graduation prior to the production of the verification.

Project-based Masters Program

Students may complete their program early if they are only enrolled in mini-1 or mini-3 or summer-1/mini-5 coursework. These students will be considered completed on the date that grades are due for those minis/sessions. Departments can indicate this to the University Registrar's Office. However, validation will be obtained from the SIS course registration. Departments must certify their students for graduation prior to the production of the verification.

Doctoral Students

PhD students who have reached All But Dissertation status may complete their program early once they have defended their thesis and have been certified in the SIS for graduation. These students will be considered completed once they have turned in their final thesis to the department, received the Dean’s signature and have been certified in the SIS. Departments should report this information to the University Registrar’s Office using the Doctoral Student Tuition Adjustment form, which should indicate the date of certification, course number and number of units. Departments should also submit the doctoral defense cards that are completed by the thesis defense committee. The information and date on this card is entered in the SIS and will become a footer on the bottom of the transcript. Students must be certified in the SIS before students are able to request an early completion verification letter.
