A loan deferment is a form provided by a lender to suspend payment on a student loan(s) while the student is still in school. Different lenders have different requirements for deferments, so it is imperative that students communicate with their lenders as to each lender's requirements for deferment.
Most often, lenders require loan deferment forms to be filled out by the University Registrar's Office to prove that a student is enrolled. Please keep in mind the following:
- Carnegie Mellon can only complete the deferment form for semesters enrolled.
- Enrollment is defined as currently attending classes and having your student account balance paid in full.
- Carnegie Mellon cannot release a deferment form if there is a hold on a student's account, financial or otherwise.
Requests to complete deferment forms may be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org, faxed to 412-268-6651, dropped off at The HUB, or mailed to the University Registrar's Office:

The student must send the deferment form from the lender complete with a mailing address or a fax number to where the form should be sent. Please allow 3-5 business days for processing.
