Calendar

Carnegie Mellon observes the semester system including two six-week summer sessions and a summer all session.

Unit of Work

Three units equal one semester hour of credit.

QPA Calculations

Carnegie Mellon defines a quality point as grade points times units for a given course. QPAs (Quality Point Averages) are calculated according to the following formula:

Semester QPA:
Quality points divided by total factorable units
Cumulative QPA:
Total quality points divided by total factorable units.

Advanced Placement Credit

Advanced placement credit is based on performance in standardized exams, including CEEB and International Baccalaureate, or by taking a Carnegie Mellon administered exam.

Reserve Officers' Training Corps

ROTC units are considered Units Passed in the student's overall semester and cumulative QPA; they are not considered Units Factorable and are not used in calculating the student's overall semester QPA, rank in class, or for academic actions. ROTC courses and grades are kept separate from the rest of the student's academic history and are located on the lower right corner of the transcript. A separate ROTC QPA is calculated.

Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 as Amended

This record is released on the condition that the student information contained herein will not be transferred to a third party without the written consent of the student.

Repeated Courses

Student who receive a failing grade for a course may repeat the course and receive degree credit if a passing grade is earned the second time. Both the R (failure) and the passing grade are calculated into the cumulative QPA. Degree credit will reflect only the first passing grade earned in the courses. Both the original and subsequent grades will appear on the transcript.

Cross-Registration

Carnegie Mellon participates in cross-registration during the academic year overseen by the Pittsburgh Council of Higher Education (PCHE). Participating institutions include: Carnegie Mellon University, Carlow College, Chatham College, Community College of Allegheny County, Duquesne University, LaRoche College, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Point Park College, Robert Morris College, and the University of Pittsburgh.

Full credit and grade(s) for cross-registered courses are transferred and factored into the semester and cumulative QPA.

Transfer Credit

Grades for coursework taken at other institutions (with the exception of the PCHE cross-registration) are not recorded. If official notification of grades is needed, the student must request a transcript from the institution where the courses were taken.

Degree Requirements

In order to graduate, students must complete all residence requirements in their approved curriculum and be recommended for degrees by the faculty of the appropriate college. Such recommendation shall be based upon the good standing of the student in academic and disciplinary matters.

Graduation with University Honors

In recognition of exemplary academic achievement as undergraduates, some students will receive University Honors. Each of the undergraduate colleges will select students for University Honors on the basis of a cumulative grade point average and/or recommendations of the faculty.

Graduation with College Honors

In recognition of exemplary academic achievements as undergraduates, some students receive College Honors. The honor notation for graduate students in the Graduate School of Industrial Administration is "with distinction."
