Guidelines for the use of Student ID Numbers/Social Security Numbers

As we all continue to ensure student privacy, we need to take particular note that email is not a secure transmission practice. That means, that andrew email is not encrypted and is transmitted as clear text. Therefore, if someone wanted to 'sniff' our email, they could pick up student data.

That all being said, we all need to stop our practice of including student ID numbers in email messages, most especially when that SID is the student's social security number.

In addition, when working with students at the counter, over the phone, in email, etc. we must stop asking for their student ID number or their SSN. Instead, you should be asking for their last and first names, and using CBB1 to locate them in the SIS.
