PlaidCa$h - Frequently Asked Questions

What is PlaidCa$h?

PlaidCa$h (formerly known as CampusXpress) is a declining balance account that you can add to at any time. Any student may have one. You can use it for food purchases, books, art supplies, computer supplies and clothing. You can use this account at Dining Services locations, on and off campus,and in all of the Retail Stores in the University Center.

How do I open a PlaidCa$h account?

You simply deposit money into your student account at The Carnegie Mellon Card Office and complete an application form.

How does it work?

We record the amount of your deposit in your student account and inthe PlaidCa$h system under your Student ID number. Your Student ID number is enclosed on the magnetic strip on the back of your Carnegie Mellon ID Card.

How do I use it?

To use your PlaidCa$h account, you present your ID Card, rather than cash, to the cashier at any location PlaidCa$h is accepted. The amount of money you have left in your account is shown after every transaction, so you will always know your balance. There's plenty of notice if the account runs low, and it is easy to make another deposit. If you would like an itemized statement, you may request one and it will be available in The Carnegie Mellon Card Office within 3-4 business days. At the end of the academic year, you may request a refund of the remaining balance if it is over $5. Else, you may simply leave it there until the followingyear.

Can I withdraw money from my PlaidCa$h Account?

No, you may not withdraw money from your PlaidCa$h account. You may only request a deposit at the end of the academic year if the balance is over $5. If there is an emergency, and the money must be withdrawn, you will be charged a withdrawal fee of $25, and your account will be closed. If you choose to reopen your account, it willbe considered a new account and you will be charged the initial fee of $15.

I'm having problems printing problems, who do I contact?

If you are having printing problems call a CCon at X8-8776, or send email to report printer problems. You can also go to the cluster to see if a CCon is on duty to help you in person. - Additional Information -
