Student Preferred Name Guidelines Update
Latest additions and changes to the guidelines implementation
This message provides an update regarding the latest additions and changes to the preferred name guidelines implementation for students.
Since Summer Session 2012, Blackboard course rosters have displayed a student’s preferred first/given name instead of the official first/given name in all instances where the student has designated a preferred name in Student Information Online (SIO). This transition to making all course rosters consistent across various applications went smoothly and will continue to be university practice.
Three additional applications of the preferred name have since been implemented, effective Fall 2012:
Health Services Records - Student records with University Health Services and Counseling and Psychological Services will reflect both the official first/given name as well as a preferred name when designated by a student in SIO. In order to seamlessly deliver care to students, it is necessary to have access to both names. Staff will be encouraged to use the preferred name in communication with students.
Photo Rosters – Course photo rosters that are requested through Faculty Information Online will now include a student’s preferred name (if one exists) instead of the student’s official first/given name. Other student information on the course photo roster remains unchanged. These rosters will assist faculty members in getting to know their students by their preferred name.
Residential Rosters - Finally, for undergraduates living in University Housing, residential rosters now include the preferred name. Various student staff members including desk attendants, resident assistants and community advisors have access to rosters that include the preferred name in place of the official first/given name when a student has made this designation in SIO. Housefellows and other administrative staff have access to both the preferred and the official university name to support necessary administrative functions.
It is important for students to log in to SIO to review and update the preferred name field as necessary. Please note that faculty will soon be printing rosters for their courses, so designating a preferred name (for those who wish to do so) prior to the first day of classes is advised.
Faculty and other academic and administrative staff may refer to The HUB website for a list of resources available to assist in determining a student’s official university name in relation to the preferred first/given name.
