Update: Using your new SMART Card

Happy New Year! If you have not yet exchanged your ID Card for the new SMART Card, we ask that you visit The HUB as soon as possible to ensure that you are carrying the official identification card of Carnegie Mellon University.

Please note the following important upcoming dates regarding the SMART Card transition:

  • Beginning January 13, 2014, riders will be required to access Port Authority Transit (PAT) methods by tapping their SMART Card on the fare box reader.
  • Through July 31, 2014, older style ID Cards that are not expired will be accepted on PAT methods.
  • Beginning August 1, 2014, entry on PAT methods will be granted to only those riders holding a valid, active SMART Card.

CMU has been in communication with Port Authority and all PAT operators have been informed of the above timeline.  During the transition period, we recommend keeping a small amount of cash with you in order to access transportation in the unlikely event there is a misunderstanding with an operator.  Although we are unable to reimburse riders, we ask that you please contact The HUB (smartcards@andrew.cmu.edu) as soon as possible if a misunderstanding occurs.  For additional information regarding the SMART Card transition and to view a list of frequently asked questions, visit The HUB website.
