What do you do with a degree in Creative Writing?
The answer is—just about anything. Students can gain practical experience while in school through Editing and Publishing internships at Carnegie Mellon University Press and editorial positions with The Oakland Review, the student literary magazine, and the student newspaper The Tartan and Dossier, its semi-annual literary supplement. Students may also take internships in the community in business, public relations, journalism and advertising.
Student and alumni writers have received many honors and awards, including the Brittingham Prize for Poetry, a Pushcart Prize, an O. Henry Award, an Emmy, the Slipstream Press Book Prize, Best American Short Stories, fellowships from the National Endowment from the Arts, and many state grants and fellowships across the country. In addition, current students and alumni are active in book and journal publishing, appearing in such distinguished journals as The Yale Review, The New Yorker, Quarterly West, Carolina Quarterly, Ploughshares, Women's Studies Quarterly, Antioch Review, and publishing books with such distinguished publishers as Norton, Random House, St. Martin’s Press, and many others.
