Bio

I am a scholar/designer specializing in communication and user experience design, with over 30 years of experience in both academia and industry. Currently, I am Professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University, where I direct the Professional & Technical Writing Programs. My current research focuses on computer-assisted rhetorical analysis and AI-enabled environments for writing instruction. My professional experience includes traditional visual communication design, visualization of complex information, and user experience design for enterprise applications.

Before my current appointment, I worked as a senior staff engineer at Qualcomm, where I worked on the research and development as well as the product management of early mobile applications. Prior to that, I was a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon's School of Design.
