Dawe Award Winners Announced

Two projects created by students in the English Department have been awarded the Charles C. Dawe Memorial Award to Encourage Innovation in Publishing.

Winning projects receive a $2,000 grant, allowing students to produce the selected print or electronic project during their senior year. The winning projects are Print-Oriented Bastards: A Literary Journal, an idea by junior Inez Pujos, and ARETE: A Publication for Women of the Panhellenic Council, an idea from juniors Ila Foley, Lauren Hirata, and Rebecca Chen.

Print-Oriented Bastards is an independent press project that presents a high-quality, biannual print journal focusing on the work of new and emerging writers. Additionally, the project aims to build community among emerging writers and, according to Inez Pujos, to serve as "every writer's little black book." The project also includes events, such as a community reading and open mic night. The project's faculty advisor, Yona Harvey, explains that such events are designed to provide practical and supportive resources beyond a venue for publication.

The second project to receive the award, ARETE: A Publication for Women of the Panhellenic Council, is an internet magazine bringing a range of relevant news - on social issues, health, campus and alumni events, and lifestyle issues - to sorority women on campus as well as to the broader community of women at Carnegie Mellon. The project features an ecologically responsible and widely distributable electronic format and a simple design system that will make it easy for future editors to maintain the publication. The faculty sponsor for this project is Suguru Ishizaki.

The Dawe Awards are made possible through the generous contribution from the family of a Professional Writing alum in gratitude for the support the student received to participate in several publishing internships that helped to launch her career. The family hopes to encourage students in the English Department who wish to pursue careers in journalism, creative, professional, or technical writing.
