English Department provides four years of full tuition support for full-time students pursuing the Ph.D. In addition, Ph.D. students teach in undergraduate courses at CMU, earning a yearly stipend. The teaching load is one course per semester.
Rhetoric students also have the opportunity to work on funded research projects in rhetoric. A number of these projects provide students with full, if temporary, funding. Students with technical backgrounds may find free lance consulting, writing, editing, and web design work.
Of course, federal loan programs—interest deferred while in school—provide supplemental income. The University also offers no-interest, short term emergency loans to needy students.
