Adamson Awards Speakers

The department invites a distinguished writer to read each year at the Adamson Awards. The Adamson Awards are presented in honor of Pauline B. Adamson at the bequest of her husband, the late Clarence H. Adamson, as a testimonial to their marriage and her interest in the English Language and American Literature.

Alumni Speaker Series

Every year, the Creative Writing program invites a distinguished alumnus to speak about his or her writing career with current students. As part of this event, we also present the Gladys Schmitt Scholarship to a student who contributes the most to the program, both in and out of the classroom.

Carol Brown Lecture Series

Carol Brown, former President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and a Life Emeritus member of Carnegie Mellon's Board of Trustees, endowed this annual lecture. The lecture series is aimed towards undergraduates and has brought numerous distinguished scholars to campus over the years.

Literary and Cultural Studies Colloquium

The Literary and Cultural Studies Series brings one to two nationally or internationally known scholars  to speak about their work with students and faculty in the department each semester. Speakers are often keyed to classes that are offered that semester. The Series also occasionally organizes panel presentations/discussions on issues and topics in the field.

Preparing for a Career in the Academy

This series is offered every two years for undergraduate and graduate students considering a career in academia. Panel sessions focus on applying to Ph.D. programs, phases in the Ph.D. and how to manage the Ph.D. timeline, conferences and networking, applying for grants and fellowships, creating a teaching portfolio and a CV, publishing, and the academic job search.

Professional Seminar

In this once-a-week professional writing seminar, practicing professionals in fields ranging from science journalism to public relations, corporate communication, marketing, print journalism, web design and information architecture come to campus to talk informally with students about the fields in which they work

Rhetoric Colloquium

The Rhetoric Series brings one to two nationally or internationally scholars  to speak about their work with students and faculty in the department each semester. Speakers are often keyed to classes that are offered that semester.

Student Reading Series

The student readings are held monthly in the Gladys Schmitt Creative Writing Center. The highlight of the Student Reading Series is the last reading of the year, the annual Senior Reading at which all graduating creative writing majors read their work. Please contact Yona Harvey for more details or visit the Creative Writing program's "Events" page.

Visiting Writers Series

The Visiting Writers Series brings nationally known writers to campus to become, for a short time, part of Carnegie Mellon’s community of writers. All readings will be held in the Adamson Wing, Baker Hall 136, on the Carnegie Mellon University campus. All readings begin at 8:00PM and are free and open to the public. Recent visitors have included Horatio Castellanos Moya, Matthea Harvey, G.E. Patterson, Alyce Miller, Charles D'Ambrosio, and Denis Johnson. [return to top]
