Welcome to the Dietrich College General Education website

Welcome! This site is designed to give you a basic understanding of the program, its requirements, and the different options that you can pursue during your time here. You can search for required and elective general education courses by department and by category. (Note this site is for finding information about the Dietrich College General Education program only; information about other college's general education programs may be obtained from their web pages.)

Begin thinking early in your undergraduate career about the most effective order in which to take the required courses and the elective courses that appeal to you, and the best way of combining them to create stimulating comparisons and synergies--not only among the various General Education courses but also in relation to courses in your planned or existing major(s) and minor(s).

The Dietrich College General Education Program is structured to span all four years of your career at Carnegie Mellon, from a required first-year writing class to courses that you select as a junior or senior to complement and augment your major course of study. On this site, you'll find information from Freshman Seminar topics to the latest information about courses outside your major. Always, of course, consult the Online Schedule of Classes for the latest, official University information on courses, and take advantage of the many advising opportunities that you will encounter during your time here.
