Benefits for Expatriate Faculty and Staff at Carnegie Mellon International Locations

Open Enrollment for 2010 Benefits

Carnegie Mellon provides benefits for its employees serving in assignments outside the United States.  We seek to provide benefits in five core areas: Health (medical, prescription drug, dental, vision and employee assistance plan), Retirement, Tuition (for employees), Life Insurance, and Disability benefits.

The benefits available to expatriate faculty and staff are comparable to the benefits for our domestic faculty and staff, but are not identical. Some benefits may involve Pittsburgh facilities or vendors not available to those outside the United States. Some benefits are governed by US and/or host nation laws, and may not be available to all faculty and staff.

Medical Benefits:
CIGNA International Expatriate Benefits (CIEB)
or InterGlobal (for CMU-Q only)

CIGNA International Expatriate Benefits (CIEB) administers our international health benefits, including Medical Insurance, Prescription Drug Coverage, Dental Insurance, Vision Insurance and Employee Assistance Plan.  For expatriate faculty and staff in Qatar, the InterGlobal health plans are also available.  (The InterGlobal option is available in two versions - one that includes non-emergency care in the United States, and one that does not.)

Our plans provide benefits both to those serving in an international location, as well as their spouse/domestic partner and dependent children living in the US or another nation. In addition to comprehensive coverage for medical services, this plan also provides services that are uniquely required for those on an international assignment, including repatriation, emergency travel and evacuation, records transfer, payment administration, and translation services.

Other Benefits:

Expatriate faculty and staff are also eligible for life insurance, long-term disability insurance and spending accounts (if they have US-taxable income).  These benefits are administered through the same plans that cover our domestic faculty and staff
