Making Benefit Elections
Like domestic faculty and staff, international employees may select/change their benefits only under certain circumstances:
- Upon your hire into an international assignment: All changes must be made within 31 days of your benefits eligibility date
- Benefits-Eligibility Date For Expatriate employees: If you are newly hired by the university, the date you start your assignment or travel to your new location. If you were a Carnegie Mellon domestic employee, the first of the month prior to your start date.
- Benefits-Eligibility Date For For Local hires: If your start date is the first of the month, your benefits-eligibility date is the same. If you start on any other day, it is the first of the month following your start.
- During the Open Enrollment period: this normally takes place during the first two full weeks of November. Your changes will take effect on the following January 1, and will be in effect for the entire calendar year, unless you experience a life/family status change.
- A Life or Family Status Change: You may make changes to your benefits due to a family or life status change. Generally, you may not change plans upon a life change, but may add/remove dependents or begin/end coverage to accommodate the change. All changes must be made within 31 days of the status change, or you will need to wait until the next open enrollment period.
All benefit elections should be made using the online
HR Connection system.
