Equal Opportunity through Affirmative Action

Carnegie Mellon is committed to reaching out to people of different races, genders, ethnicities and physical abilities, and strives to create an environment of inclusion that celebrates our differences and highlights our commonalties. We are privileged to guarantee equal opportunity for all and to attract the best students, faculty, and staff in a manner that reflects the multicultural environment in which our graduates will work and live.

A diverse campus community is essential to enriching intellectual exchanges and enhancing cultural understanding. Likewise, it is important for the diversity of our community to reflect our regional, national, and global constituencies. We must be more successful than we have been in realizing and nurturing a diverse community.

In our Statement of Assurance, we formally state our policy that discrimination will not be tolerated. Carnegie Mellon annually reaffirms its commitment to equal opportunity and affirmative action in employment decisions and personnel actions through our Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action policy.

How do we implement our EEO/AA goals?

Each year, the university develops an Affirmative Action plan detailing our goals and progress to date. University leaders share the responsibility for implementation, and we continuously monitor our progress to ensure that the university's non-discriminatory policy is carried out.

What do we mean when we refer to racial or ethnic diversity? These definitions, consistent with those found in Title 41, Part 60-3.4B of the Code of Federal Regulations, may help you to understand.
