CMU’s current systems, initially designed and implemented 20 years ago, have been able to evolve over time, but are not able to adapt to the University’s growing demands. "It’s a combination of business and technology," says Steve Huth, Vice Provost, Chief Information Officer and an Executive Sponsor of the CMUWorks Project. He continues, "First, business requirements change constantly. Whether it’s because of new processes, changing rules and regulations, our becoming a global University, or just increased expectations of when services should be available (“Why can’t I get to my information anytime/anywhere?”), we need an HR/Payroll system agile enough to support the business of running a twenty-first century university.
However software generally doesn’t age gracefully. What may have begun as an elegant design when the system was first conceived 25 years ago, today limits what you can realistically accomplish. We’ve extended the HR/Payroll system in various ways and others have built shadow systems to meet their own needs. As these modifications accumulate over the years it becomes increasingly difficult to be sure that a change in one area doesn’t result in some unexpected behavior elsewhere. This limits the range of services you can provide and leads to audit and compliance issues. When it became clear that the current system couldn’t keep up with the changing needs of the university it was time to look at other options."
In 2010 the collaborative CMUWorks Team embarked on the Vendor Selection Process.
