Supplemental Life and AD&D Insurance

Carnegie Mellon makes additional Life and AD&D Insurance available at group rates for interested individuals. Our Supplemental Life and AD&D Insurance is provided through MetLife.

Full-time benefits-eligible faculty and staff may purchase supplemental insurance in increments of your life base salary.

• Purchase 1 to 4 levels of insurance, up to a maximum of $1,000,000 coverage (basic plus supplemental coverage combined).
• A Statement of Health is required for Supplemental coverage of more than $500,000 (not combined with Basic).
• Rates are based on age and base salary (see chart right)
• Enroll in supplemental coverage within 31 days of your benefits-eligibility.
• Increase supplemental coverage by 1 level at Open Enrollment or with a life status change.
• Imputed income taxes are required for the value of life insurance coverage in excess of $50,000.

Special Features of Supplemental Life Insurance Plan

• Will Preparation (.pdf) – for you and your spouse/domestic partner at no additional cost.
• Enhanced Portability – continue Supplemental Life Insurance at your own expense if you terminate your employment or your coverage ends.
• Accelerated Benefits Option - receive up to 80% of your insurance if you are diagnosed as terminally ill with a life expectancy of twelve months or less.
• Total Control Account - provides your loved ones with a way to manage the proceeds of the policy when an insurance benefit is paid.
